Re-Engergzing DTLA Dining Options @ Nickel Diner (Downtown)

Downtown Los Angeles has seen its better days in the glorious 50's and 60's where Alfred Hitchcock was so in love with the beauty of the city, he insisted that some of the scenic shots and interior filming be done right here in the middle of downtown LA. Remembered Biltmore Hotel in the movie "Vertigo"? I am just wondering whatever happened to the good old days?

Downtown has seen its worst after the glorious golden days. When I was younger passing Little Tokyo, my parents would never stopped here because it was just too ghetto and very dangerous. Skid Row wasn't just one street, it was all over majority of the city.

With downtown seeing some revitalization, there are plenty of reasons for new hope as trendy bars and lounges begin to open up and mixing in with some of the old landmark joints we have come to associate with the heart of Los Angeles. One of the very new place that opened up last year was Nickel Diner. It was very ambitious as it wanted to open up a diner to not only become the sensation in all of LA, but more importantly to serve the locals that lived in this part of downtown.

The great thing about this place opening up in an areas otherwise would have been used by skid row residents, was that it gave downtown another positive establishment for people to dine in. It attracts the hipsters that frequent the financial and art district, who all love coming down here for their unique awesome baked goodies and a twist to the good old American cuisine.

The two female co-owners have decided to opened up this restaurant with menu that represents old fashioned American home cooked meal with eggs being the center piece of most major dishes on the menu . If you check out their website with the menu posted, you will see that the co-owners have playfully named some of their dishes after some street lingos or terminology. It's very subtle, but you'll to look for it deeply on the menu.

There is something about this place that brings high energy and unseen spirits that feeds into you where you can feel it. I looked up the walls and ceilings with some old painted murals from a previous restaurant that existed before Nickel Diner. It's bustling and always on the go. Every moment is not wasted on the staff that worked here. Funny thing, my waitress and hostess was one of the co-owners. In fact, both of them was on hand working on a Saturday afternoon busy to ensure everything is going smoothly.

After I pursued the menu a while further, I decided to get one of the their egg scrambles with salmon, leeks, roasted tomatoes, sour cream, and chives mixed in. The plate was accompanied by potatoes and wheat toast with their homemade jam. I didn't exactly know how runny the egg would be, but it wasn't overcooked and left it just right. The flavors to the salmon didn't leave any fishy smell to the egg and worked very well with the roasted tomatoes that was among the egg scramble.

One of the big startling surprised I have learned before coming here was that the pastry chef that was hired had previously worked under Thomas Keller. So I was a bit excited to see some of the amazing baked pastries that would be offering here. The co-owner that was serving our tables had made its round of showing some of the wonderful that are on display for today. I saw a chocolate cover ding dong with lemon margarine with a 5 cent icings that caught my eye.

Of course I just have to take one home with me. Too bad it didn't have the 5 cent icing on top of that chocolate ding dong.

One of the most popular ordered item in Nickel Diner was their famous Bacon covered Donut. It had all the nice little bacon bits chopped up and place all over the glazed donut you see below. Whether or not it's a artery stuffer, you just have to live a little to fully enjoy this yummy treat.

I can't wait to come back here and try out more of their bacon donuts and other pastries items. The breakfast was worth trekking for at brunch. They do also served salad and sandwiches for lunch. I have a good feeling their breakfast items and baked goodies are the hit of this establishment.

Even though I later figured out the co-owners were my hostess and waitress, I was treated to excellent service and they were on the constant move to make sure everyone not only enjoyed their meal, but the experience as well. Sometimes that the dining experience get lost even if the food was good. I'm glad they were able to balance it equally when I was down there. Definitely want to try out their lunch menu items when I'm there on the next go.

Before I left, I looked up the upper wall above the front door. There was a poem that was left for the restaurant before the remodeling. The co-owners decided to leave it and serve it as a great reminder.

The Poem above the front door

This place has all the charms that kept its remembrance from yesteryear. The diner is slowly trying to change its perception of downtown can have one of its own place serve great food. It may not happened overnight, but its getting there as their customers are continue to stop by for either breakfast or brunch. The diner will eventually open for dinner, but for now it will closed 3pm daily until dinner service begins.

Oh, by the way. Why is this place called Nickel Diner even though nothing cost 5 cents in this establishment? Apparently it's a nickname for the place because it's around the corner from 5th Street. Get it? "Nickel" diner!

Donut Man (Glendora)

After a night of getting a pre-dinner of a hot Bobba tea drink with a side of spicy chicken, a full course dinner at Newport seafood, and a dessert of ice cream at Fosselman's Ice Cream. Believe it or not, there was actually more room in my belly.

The birthday boy wanted to put a capper to his birthday celebration by suggesting we should make a run for donuts. Not just any donuts, but strawberry donuts!

I'm skeptical towards donuts. It's not my kind of treat or snack as it's more for lazy couch potatoes and unmotivated slobs you seen in a Simpson's episode. I swored Chief Wiggum would make a perfect national spokesperson for donuts.

We hit up the 210 freeway (on its way to Vegas, in case you want to make a pit stop) and off the Grand St. exit. The street of Route 66 is a dark ghetto street at the middle of the night. We had to be on the lookout for a stand by itself donut stand with its own parking lot. It's hard to find on a dark street, but we did managed to track it down.

Once we found the stand, we were not alone in making a midnight run (I'm talking about 12:45 am in the morning when this occurred) for some tasty donuts. It's comforting for me to know that there are die hard donut fans at this late of the hour and we were not the only losers coming here this late.

The seasonal donuts right now is the strawberry donuts. What entails this tart attraction to this stand was the fact that they split a donut open like a hamburger bun and stuffed it with fresh strawberries that usually reserved for tarts or cupcakes. Then they lavished some sweet syrupy jam all over this delicious yummy monstrosity.

From Left (clockwork): Strawberry Donut, Raspberry Cheesecake, Chocolate donut with Bavarian Creme

Take a look at what I got the first time around, I went out and get a chocolate bomb like donut with a Bavarian creme inside. I also got a raspberry cream cheesecake.

After about maybe 8 minutes?...maybe more or less...I decided right then and there to order another strawberry donut. It's one of those impulse buying moment I had that I couldn't controlled myself. Yes, I'm a loser at this point and gave in to temptations. It's like I am going to be on a diet anytime soon.

From Top (clockwork): Strawberry Donut, Apple Crumble, Bear Claw

So I took another round of strawberry donut with a bearclaw and a apple crumble donut. Gluttony will not be the only sin I had to endure. I can see sloth in my future. These strawberry donuts are only seasonal just like strawberry would be. In the upcoming season, peach donuts are the next seasonal fruits to be part of the lore for this stand.

It's something that I don't know if I am going to cave in for. I just lose my self control as that night will attest. These donuts are damaging to my belief of self control. It's so worth it for $11 for these 6 donuts.

I'm faithful to Pineapple buns, but for one night I surrendered to Donut Man.

Breakfast @ Noodle House (Arcadia) - CLOSED

I had an epitome one time in the early wee morning of the hours trying to figure out on what’s the meaning of life. I don’t think I formulated an idea or concept to that.

So I started searching for a place that opens at wee hour of the morning so I can get my mind out of that.

I came across the Noodle House because of the fact that it’s the most eastern restaurant listed on Jonathan Gold’s 2007 version of Essential 99. It’s one of the only few selected Taiwanese places listed in his pitiful list. But I gotta handed to him on at least getting the right places out on the list. Especially this place.

Located in the dead area of Arcadia where it has more auto-body shops in the intersection than any street corners you will ever come across to. It’s right next door to a Fantastic Sam’s. Totally obscure in a forsaken abysmal part of the town.

There is no decor for this place unless you are into those sticky tables and dry plastered walls. Probably about 12 tables with a few booth seats. However, I noticed that a few group of people didn’t like the small tables, so they bunched up two tables together for a group of 5 people. Very inconsiderate of that group if the place was packed, but who is going to argue with those old Taiwanese.

Opened at 7am in the morning to 7pm at night on all 7 days of the week, it was one of the very few that I can find for a good Taiwanese breakfast. Yi Mei Deli comes to my mind out of this, but I want to try something new for a change.

After looking at the simplistic lamented menu, I noticed the breakfast prices was uber cheap! Talking about everything that runs about a dollar something to the most expensive breakfast item of beef roll for $4.50. I was thinking about ordering three items, but it rang up to only $3.50. I felt like a cheapo so I substituted a steam veggie & pork bun for that beef roll.

Boy am I glad I did that.

First I ordered a hot steamed Soy milk and a Yo-tel (Chinese donut, but the translation is called “a stick of butter”) for $3 total. Plus I ordered a beef roll on top of that.

The beef roll, Chinese Donut, and Hot Soy Milk

The Yo-tel was probably the closest I’m going to get to Taiwan. It’s freshly made every day and it’s very different from other places that made them. The Yo-tel was soft, not flaky or crunchy. You can actually bend the donut and not break apart that easily.

The beef roll has some spicy kick to it. It’s like a Chinese version of enchiladas where they stacked the beef with fried onion cake. It’s my favorite version of breakfast burrito. It’s soft and chewy. You don’t really need to add any spices or sauce with that.

They also do serve lunch and dinner where a lot of noodle and rice items are on display with very low prices ranging in the $4 mark to around $6.

The service is very friendly. Everyone love to converse with lao ban liang (boss lady). She is a delight to talk to and treat her customers with very wonderful greeting.

Here’s a great about coming here in the breakfast time. A lot of Asian places don’t exactly accept tips on the table. One of the cool thing Rachel Ray will like in her budget dining is that this is one of the place in the morning that she can fit it in for her segment.

I already felt cheap enough, but spending only $7.50 for a yummy and very satisfying breakfast is a great way to kick off the day. Also a great way to keep me going on the right track!

Definitely will make my way to come here more often if I ever have an anxiety in early morning hours. ....not that I ever really had it. Ha!

Oh yes…cash only place.

Edit 11/29/08: I got some news to report. According to some sources I got, the place had either Changed owners or have closed down. Either way, if there is a new ownership, then this place is not going to be the same anymore. It's so sad because I came here last year right after the places made it on to Jonathan Gold's Essential 99 List in LA Weekly. I guess it got so popular it can't kept the same cheap price while trying to rotate people in and out.

It's sad news for me that it will change hands or just simply will close. This was my favorite breakfast place.
